Come Unto Me

Matthew 11.28

‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.’

This is a wonderful text. I think after John 3.16 (God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall have everlasting life) this must be considered as the second most known and most memorised verse in the Bible. It has turned the life of so many people upside down in a very positive sense.

Actually, this is the verse of my conversion. I had rejected Christ. I said ‘he is just a prophet. He is not the son of God. How can God have a son? Is it possible?’ But the Lord in his mercy has taken me from the darkness of Islam and opened my eyes to see the majesty of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. So this is a wonderful invitation. So our subject tonight is taken directly from the text, ‘come unto me.’ It can be called a divine invitation, a royal invitation, a heavenly invitation, the greatest invitation, a gracious invitation, the invitation of all invitations. But it’s so simple and direct. Jesus saying to all sinners, men and women, ‘come unto me.’ And as you know, there are so many invitations. There are so many types of invitations. There is no need to give a list. But definitely this specific and special invitation is a matter of life and death. As I said earlier, it’s the greatest.
