What Is Your Life?

James 4.14

‘Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.’

‘Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.’

In verse 14 we have a question and that is my title tonight: what is your life? I believe this is a certain question, it is a sobering question, but do you see it is a very personal question. What is your life made of? Where is your life heading to? These are really important questions we need to ask ourselves. Am I just natural person? If I may kindly say: am I just an animal, just living an animal life, just for the here and now? Or am I a spiritual person or a spiritual person knowing that there is another life? There is another life. We are the most miserable people in the world if it’s only this earth, this world we live for – but there is something better. Is your life consistent? Does it consist in something heavy, or is it lightweight? Is your life something substantial, or is it just insignificant, just vanity? It’s interesting – the verse is not saying ‘what is life?’ (that’s another subject we could deal with – what is life), but the verse is very penetrating and it’s very personal: it says ‘what is your life?’

So think about it tonight: where will you stand? What will your life stand upon? Does your life stand upon the Rock, the Lord Jesus Christ, or is your life just standing on sinking sand? Oh, it won’t last long there, if it’s on just sinking sand, but you want your life to be valuable? To be precious? To be meaningful? To be purposeful? Oh my dear friends I shiver, really, I’m scared – because to die without God, to die facing God is terrible. I don’t want to to scare you or threaten you – I scare myself in a sense – but to make you to think about the value God has put upon your life.
